The history of outplacement services dates back from the time when Bernard Haldane designed and delivered the job search counseling services to assist the veterans of World War–II in reentry of into the post war work place. During 1960s, staffing companies expanded Haldane’s services to include consulting with corporate managers on how to fire or terminate employees, remove them from corporate payrolls and support their job efforts until they find new positions. Such services were called service outplacement and during 1960’s with Saul G Gruner – a Haldane franchise owner in New York to become one of the early entrepreneurs in corporate outplacement.
The support provided by Saul G Gruner in the early 1960s was one of the first known corporate outplacement project for Humble Oil Company in Bayonne. By late 1960s and 1970s – the corporate outplacement services began to expand across the United States. Over 50 known outplacement firms have earned revenues worth more than 80 million dollars by 1980s. Outplacement services emerged as an entrepreneurial start up industry attracting experienced business professionals, professional counselors and job search consultants
